How do I count words and characters?
Type or paste your text into the box above and the counts update as you go. You'll see words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines and the size in bytes, plus how long the text takes to read and to say out loud.
How are words counted?
Words are found using your browser's built-in word boundaries, so hyphenated words, contractions and languages written without spaces (such as Chinese or Japanese) are handled properly. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, however they're encoded.
How can I check a length limit?
Choose a limit from the list and the bar shows how much of it you've used. Google usually shows about 60 characters of a page title and about 155 of a meta description, an X post is capped at 280, and a single SMS holds 160 characters, or 70 if the message contains emoji or accented characters outside the standard SMS alphabet. Longer SMS messages are split into several parts. Pick 'Custom limit' for anything else, such as a form field.
How is reading time worked out?
Reading time is the word count divided by a reading speed, which defaults to 238 words per minute, a typical figure for adults reading silently. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or a voice-over. Both speeds can be changed in the settings.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word appears as a share of all the words in your text. The table lists your ten most-used words. Common words like 'the' and 'and' are hidden by default so the words that matter show up, and you can turn that off in the settings.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is counted in your browser, so your text never leaves your device and isn't stored.
